I guess you could say one of our couple resolutions for the new year is to adventure to at least one new place a month this year. So, day one of the new year we headed out to Cannon Beach to visit Haystack rock. I'm creating a list of places in Oregon to visit as a type of bucket list. Any suggestions?
It's been two weeks since my back went out. And after spending such a long time in the emergency room I have gone back to our regular doctor once and the chiropractor once. I am getting along pretty well all day without any need for pain medicine, but sleeping is still a little rough. The chiropractor really seemed to help! I go back in on Friday and then next week I will be seeing the neurologist to see what other types of therapies I need to do. Physical therapy is a given but I might have to try acupuncture or something like that. I'm back to teaching most of my lessons and I can't wait to be riding again! Hopefully soon.
Well, in an exciting and unexpected twist of events I threw my back out raking footing in the riding arena. But turns out I didn't just tweak it like I expected. I slipped two disks. Right after I felt my back go out I went to the office at the barn to sit down and just let it settle for a few minutes before I got back up to teach my lessons. When I tried to stand back up though my legs just shook and I had to hold myself up with my arms. I ended up getting stuck in the doorway to the office and that's when I got help laying down on the office floor. I laid on some ice and thought I'd be good to get up in a little bit. Yeah right. My back just never stopped spasming so I called my mom to help come get me and take me home to rest.
When she got to the barn I tried to move my legs off the chair they were resting on and felt the most pain I have yet to experience. Tears just shot out of my face. Then I started going into a little bit of shock and started to get cold. Unfortunately I knew I wasn't getting up on my own so we had to call the ambulance. I was so thankful for the paramedics who were able to give me some IV pain meds and lift me up on a gurney. Silly me thought being in the emergency room would go a lot quicker than it did too. I was in a lot of pain still so the meds I was given kind of knocked me out, but didn't make the pain go away completely. The doctor kept trying to have me sit up, but I just couldn't get my body to do it. Eventually she ordered a CT scan of my lower back showing that I had two herniated disks. Thankfully they weren't pressing on any nerves. Eventually, after my body regulated a little bit I was eventually able to stand up and shuffle around with a walker so I was sent home.
So after about ten hours of dealing with my back I finally was able to make it home, sleep and celebrate my birthday the next day, the way any old lady would. With my cat on my lap, my walker and ice cream cake. Here's to 25!
So with my fitness restart came the commitment to a gym membership. I figured if I was going to be for real about it I needed to invest in a way to do so. When my money is involved I take things more seriously. Also, part of my need for a gym membership was because I wanted to swim. Basically, I was going to learn how to swim. I can survive in water for a short time. But to actually navigate with some know how, ha yeah right! I've only gotten in the pool three times so far and it's been interesting to say the least. The first time I kept my head out of the water basically the whole time and panicked when I tried going below the surface.
The second time I gave up on trying to exercise in the pool and just spent about 20 minutes playing under water. I started to actually feel comfortable being under water but the whole breathing thing was still an interesting event. In the lane next to me was a guy getting his laps in while using a snorkel and I thought that was brilliant! So, my third trip to the pool I was much more geared up, I had my goggles, nose plug, real swim suit and a snorkel. I had even done some workout research and grabbed some of the floaty exercise equipment and went to town.
I NEVER thought I would be one to swim, I am definitely a land mammal! But, as I push myself and trust my body to do it's thing the more accomplished I feel in the pool. That third time in the pool I actually started to feel the rhythm of what swimming was supposed to feel like. I just need to build up my endurance and lung capacity so I'm not huffing and puffing each 25m. I haven't experienced this is in a long time, to be exhausted from my work out and not be able to do any more, but to be excited to get back to it. I can't wait to watch my swimming improve over the next several months!
I've never done a 5k before let alone a fun one. I was pretty excited and had no idea what to expect. All I knew was there were going to be bubbles! And oh man were there bubbles!!! They were colored at each station and were truly a wall of bubbles that you got to walk through. Maybe one of these days I'll put together a video of all the clips we took. I will totally be down to do another fun run in the future!
I've only really enjoyed working out when I wasn't working out. I enjoy exercise when I am playing a game, competing or as a secondary benefit, like at work lol. I've started and stopped running multiple times. Stephen told me I really needed to get real running shoes in order to keep going and to possibly enjoy it. So, I finally did it! I have a super nice and cushy pair of running shoes. Let's see if they help change my attitude!
Life is like playing chess, moves and counter moves. Well we made a big move this spring and we are so grateful to my parents for opening up their home to us during this transition. We have both landed jobs we really enjoy and have spent the last several months saving up for somewhere of our own. Initially we just planned on renting again. Hopefully somewhere a little nicer than the cave we had in Tampa, but budget always wins on that one.
I started searching around for apartments and dang is the Portland area EXPENSIVE! Not only is rent itself a lot higher, but with our small zoo the price just goes through the roof! Renting definitely seemed like it was not doable. So, we jumped on to the next train of thought. Maybe we should buy our first home.
So, my research shifted to the housing market. We knew that before we could really get serious about buying something we would need to get pre-approved, but why not look and see what to expect. Turns out even small rundown houses were selling fast! And for way over estimated value. Perfect. Maybe things weren't as tight as they seemed, we've been saving the majority of every paycheck so we have a bit saved up. After talking to a few people we sort of realized we weren't as set as we thought.
When we first got here we went to the Home & Garden show at the fairgrounds and we were introduced to a company that makes tiny houses. After walking through the model and talking with the builder it didn't seem like such a bad option. We would just need to find land that was approved somehow for a tiny house. Living in a small house is definitely something we'd considered before and are not opposed to! And after walking through one, I think we could really do it.
So we haven't nailed down for sure what we are planning on doing, but living small is definitely an option. We are still looking around, but something will be happening soon.
I've been wanting a personal space on the internet for some time now. A place to just be real, casual and open. A place where I didn't have to spend so much time getting the right picture to post and could just share what is going on in our lives. I had a personal blog through the end of high school and beginning of college and I loved it so much (rip). So, that is what Hensley Rose is going to be. A place where I can share what is going on in my & Stephen's life.
Like the fact that as I write this, one hand is trapped by a snuggling kitty and there is a passed out puppy on the pillow next to my face. That is real life and that's what I want to share more of.
